OK; that's normal in case it can't get a password from the server.
The question now is why that is.  Could you try running this:

make run-client CLIENTARGS="--options-for=mandos-client:--debug"

And, perhaps, also this:

strace -f plugins.d/mandos-client --debug --seckey=keydir/seckey.txt --pubkey=keydir/pubkey.txt >huge-log.txt 2>&1

And send us the huge-log.txt?

Also, I've attached the key and config files I just used
(successfully) here.  Could you try replacing keydir/pubkey.txt,
keydir/seckey.txt, and confdir/clients.conf with these and try again?
If *that* fails, it seems we must have a difference in our systems,
possibly in the shared libraries.  I'll test again on a sid system
when I can; I'm running on a lenny system currrently.
