More observations FYI:

client on loco (sid, xfs, c7), server on nova (sid, xfs, i386) works OK.

client on nova (sid, xfs, i386), server on loco  (sid, xfs, c7) fails - (same 
error as client and server on loco.

Seems unhappy if server on c7 - as earlier tests hinted at.
